Trump Threatens Russia with Sanctions Unless Ceasefire is Reached

US President, Donald Trump has warned that he may impose large-scale sanctions and tariffs on Russia unless it agrees to a ceasefire and a peace deal with Ukraine.

In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump expressed concern over the ongoing conflict, stating that Russia was "absolutely 'pounding' Ukraine on the battlefield." He indicated that he was "strongly considering" severe economic measures against Moscow, including banking sanctions and tariffs, until a final peace settlement is reached.

"Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely 'pounding' Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you," Trump wrote in his social media post.

The statement comes amid escalating tensions and continued hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with no clear resolution in sight. While Trump did not provide further details on the proposed sanctions, his remarks suggest a tougher stance towards Moscow should he return to office.

Trump has previously been criticised for his approach to Russia. His latest comments signal a potential shift in his strategy, emphasising economic pressure to push for negotiations between the warring nations.

There has been no immediate response from the Kremlin or the Ukrainian government regarding Trump’s remarks. However, his call for urgent peace talks comes as international efforts to mediate an end to the war have struggled to gain traction.

Whether Trump’s threat of sanctions would have any immediate impact on the situation remains to be seen. Nevertheless, his statement has reignited discussions on the role the United States might play in influencing the conflict’s outcome.
