In a significant development on the international stage, U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed details of a "lengthy and highly productive" phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The discussion, which covered a wide range of global issues, included topics such as Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, and the influence of the U.S. dollar.
Trump emphasised the historical ties between the United States and Russia, recalling their alliance during World War II. "We both reflected on the great history of our nations, and the fact that we fought so successfully together in World War II, remembering that Russia lost tens of millions of people, and we, likewise, lost so many," Trump stated.
A central focus of the call was the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Both leaders reportedly expressed a strong desire to end the war, with Trump asserting, "We want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the war with Russia/Ukraine." Trump highlighted that President Putin echoed his campaign motto of "COMMON SENSE," signifying a shared approach to future diplomatic efforts.
Trump announced plans for both nations to strengthen diplomatic relations, including mutual visits and the immediate initiation of peace negotiations. "We agreed to work together very closely, including visiting each other's nations," he said. The negotiations will be led by a team of high-profile U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Trump also mentioned his intention to contact Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly to inform him of the discussions. He expressed confidence in the success of the upcoming negotiations, stating, "Millions of people have died in a war that would not have happened if I were President, but it did happen, so it must end. No more lives should be lost!"
In a notable diplomatic gesture, Trump thanked Putin for the recent release of Marc Fogel, an American detained in Russia. Trump confirmed he had personally greeted Fogel at the White House the previous evening, highlighting the importance of the call in fostering tangible outcomes.
Trump concluded his statement with optimism about the future of U.S.-Russia relations and the potential for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict: "I believe this effort will lead to a successful conclusion, hopefully soon."
