Peter Obi Pays Tribute to Nigerian Football Legends
Enugu, Nigeria – 19 April 2025
Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, paid heartfelt tributes to two late Nigerian football icons, Christian Chukwu and Christian Isiadinso, during visits to their families in Enugu and Enugu-Ukwu on Saturday. The revered footballers, who both played pivotal roles in the legendary Old Rangers team, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire millions across Nigeria.
Obi, in a statement shared on X, described Chukwu and Isiadinso as "national icons and patriots" whose contributions to Nigerian football were unparalleled. Chukwu, a former player and coach of the Super Eagles, earned numerous accolades during his illustrious career, while Isiadinso’s exploits on the field helped cement the Old Rangers’ place in the nation’s sporting history. "Their immense contributions left an indelible mark on our nation’s history and collective memory," Obi said.
During his visit, Obi also met with Emmanuel Okala, another surviving legend and close associate of Chukwu, to offer condolences and celebrate the enduring legacy of the Old Rangers. He praised the dedication, discipline, and passion of these players, noting that they remain "timeless role models" for future generations.
However, Obi expressed disappointment at the lack of recognition and support for Nigeria’s sporting heroes. He highlighted the absence of Federal Government representatives at the funerals of two Old Rangers members, for which he personally covered burial expenses. "Regrettably, it is painfully evident that our country has not shown these icons the kindness and recognition they truly deserve," he remarked.
Reflecting on his tenure as Governor, Obi noted that he introduced monthly stipends for Old Rangers members to support their welfare. He called for greater efforts to honour Nigeria’s heroes during their lifetimes and to preserve their legacies after their passing. "We must not wait until our heroes are gone before we celebrate them," he urged.
Obi concluded by praying for the repose of Chukwu and Isiadinso’s souls and for strength for their families during this period of grief. The visits underscored his longstanding commitment to supporting Nigeria’s sporting legends and advocating for their recognition.
