Valentine Ozigbo Mourns Hon. Justice Azuka, Calls for Urgent Security Reforms in Anambra
In the wake of an unthinkable tragedy that has shaken the very foundations of Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo has expressed profound grief over the untimely death of Hon. Justice Azuka, a House of Assembly member representing Onitsha North 1 State Constituency.
Taking to his official X account, Ozigbo shared a heartfelt message that painted a vivid picture of the sorrow that now engulfs Azuka's family and the larger community.
"In the somber aftermath of an unthinkable tragedy, I stood yesterday in the home of our fallen brother, Hon. Justice Azuka, watching grief paint itself across the faces of those he held dearest," Ozigbo wrote. "The anguish in his wife's eyes, the inconsolable sorrow of his mother, and the profound pain etched on his brother's face—these are images that will haunt our collective conscience forever."
Ozigbo did not shy away from addressing the systemic failures that have contributed to this devastating loss. He criticized the deteriorating security situation in Anambra State, describing it as a "catastrophic failure of security and governance." Reflecting on the past three years, he highlighted the steady erosion of safety within communities, emphasizing that Hon. Azuka's death should have marked the beginning of his service, not the end.
"Just a few days ago, we were confronted with devastating videos confirming our worst fears about our House of Assembly member. This loss strikes at the very heart of our community," Ozigbo lamented.
He condemned the reactive strategies employed to address security challenges, including the transformation of local groups into vigilantes and the deployment of mercenaries lacking adherence to the rule of law. According to Ozigbo, these measures underscore a flawed, reactionary approach rather than a proactive strategy needed to ensure lasting safety.
"While we demand justice for Hon. Azuka and support the elimination of criminal elements in our society, we must ensure this is done with fairness and due process. This tragedy must serve as more than just another statistic—it must be the catalyst for genuine change in Anambra State," he asserted.
Ozigbo's message also carried a powerful call to action, particularly directed at the youth. He urged them to reject the growing normalization of violence and insecurity, emphasizing that Hon. Azuka's death should inspire decisive action and meaningful reforms.
"To our youth, particularly: this is our clarion call. We cannot accept this descent into chaos as our new normal. The time for decisive action is now. Hon. Azuka's sacrifice must not be in vain," Ozigbo declared.
Concluding his tribute, Ozigbo extended heartfelt condolences to Azuka's grieving family, assuring them that the entire community stands in solidarity with them during this dark period.
"To his grieving family—your loss is immeasurable, but please know that you don't mourn alone. Our entire community stands with you in this dark hour. Rest peacefully, Hon. Justice Azuka. We will carry forward your legacy of service and dedication to our people."
The tragic loss of Hon. Justice Azuka has indeed left a void in Anambra State, but as Ozigbo poignantly noted, it must also ignite the necessary conversations and actions to prevent such heart-wrenching occurrences in the future.
