South East Development Commission Inks Landmark Deal with UNDP

Lagos, 11 April 2025 – The South East Development Commission (SEDC) has signed a transformative partnership agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), marking a significant step towards accelerating economic growth in Nigeria’s South East region.

The agreement, formalised today, was signed by SEDC’s Managing Director/CEO, Mark Okoye, and Executive Director for Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Rural Development, Cliff Ogbede. Representing UNDP were Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, Africa Regional Director, and Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah, Resident Representative to Nigeria. SEDC Chairman Dr. Emeka Wogu CON was represented by board members Chief Joke Chukwuma and Barr. Ifeanyi Agwu.

Under the partnership, UNDP will provide technical expertise to craft a comprehensive South East Development Plan, slated for launch later this year. The collaboration will also bolster the establishment of key SEDC structures, including units for Climate Change & Sustainability, Diaspora Coordination, and Monitoring & Evaluation.

A cornerstone of the agreement is the joint development of innovative programmes under the Integrated Smart States initiative, focusing on digital innovation and smart governance to drive sustainable progress.

“This strategic collaboration aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and underscores our commitment to transformative economic development in the South East,” said Okoye.

The partnership is poised to enhance the region’s economic framework, leveraging UNDP’s global expertise to deliver measurable impact.
