Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Petitions Senate President Akpabio Over Sexual Harassment, Abuse of Office

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has officially petitioned Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of sexual harassment and abuse of office. The petition was presented during the Senate plenary sitting on Wednesday, 5th March 2025.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition has sparked widespread reactions, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations. In her statement, she insisted that accountability and justice must prevail, emphasising the need for transparency in Nigeria’s legislative leadership.

Following the petition, members of various civil society groups gathered at the entrance of the National Assembly (NASS) in Abuja, demanding that Akpabio step down to allow for a fair and unbiased investigation. The demonstrators, carrying placards and chanting slogans, urged the Senate to take decisive action to uphold the integrity of the legislative body.

A civil society leader speaking at the protest stated, “We demand that the Senate President step aside immediately to allow for an independent and unbiased investigation into the claims raised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The credibility of the National Assembly is at stake.”

Security personnel were deployed to the scene to maintain order, preventing the protesters from entering the National Assembly complex. Despite this, the demonstration remained peaceful as calls for Akpabio’s resignation grew louder.

Neither Akpabio nor his office has issued an official response to the petition and the protest at the time of this report. However, political observers believe this development will further intensify the scrutiny surrounding the Senate President and increase public pressure for a formal response.
