EFCC Honours Slain Officer with Posthumous Award of Bravery
8 February 2025
Sokoto, Nigeria — The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has posthumously honoured Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASE II Aminu Harisu Sahabi, with an Award of Bravery. The announcement was made during Olukoyede’s condolence visit to the late officer’s family in the Gawon Nama area of Sokoto metropolis on Friday, 7 February 2025.
Sahabi was tragically killed on 17 January 2025 in Awka, Anambra State, while on an official assignment to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters. The incident has been described as a cold-blooded act against an officer who was dedicated to serving his country.
Accompanied by senior EFCC officials, including the Director of Finance and Accounts, Commander of the EFCC (CE) Ahmed Pate, Acting Director of the Sokoto Zonal Directorate, Deputy Commander of the EFCC (DCE) Nwanneka Nwokike, and other management staff, Olukoyede offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Addressing the family, Olukoyede said, “As a Commission, we share in the pains and grief of this loss, but we cannot question the time that the Lord calls us home. The late Aminu was a gallant officer, full of promise, serving his fatherland when he met with this tragic incident. Indeed, Allah gives and Allah takes.”
Olukoyede assured the family that Sahabi’s sacrifice would never be forgotten. “I am personally here to assure you that his sacrifice will never be forgotten, nor will those accused of this heinous act be allowed to go free. They must and will face the full wrath of the law,” he declared.
He added, “There is nothing on earth that can replace the loss of a loved one, but let us be consoled that Allah’s timing cannot be questioned, and continue to pray for the repose of his soul.”
In recognition of Sahabi’s bravery, Olukoyede presented a Posthumous Award for Bravery and a Condolence Letter on behalf of the EFCC and the Federal Government of Nigeria to the late officer’s family.
“Going forward, I want to assure you that the family will not be forgotten. I will make time to visit intermittently because, for us in the EFCC, we are a family. We have finished processing the benefits of the late officer, which will be released to the next of kin immediately,” Olukoyede stated.
Responding on behalf of the family, Justice Mohammed Lawal Shuaibu, JCA, expressed deep gratitude to the EFCC Chairman and his delegation for their support. “I was literally on the phone with the Chairman consecutively after the incident, and we also saw the delegation of the EFCC during the burial of our son, led by the Secretary to the Commission,” he said.
Justice Shuaibu also commended the EFCC for naming a building at the EFCC Academy in Abuja after the late officer, a gesture he described as a fitting tribute to Sahabi’s sacrifice.
Following his visit to the bereaved family, Olukoyede proceeded to the EFCC’s Sokoto Zonal Directorate, where he inspected a guard of honour and held strategic meetings with EFCC officers, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to justice, integrity, and the protection of its personnel.
