Nigerian Football Legend Dies at 64, President Tinubu pays Tribute
France 12 April 2025 – Nigeria mourns the loss of football icon Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 74. President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow, extending condolences to Chukwu’s family, friends, and the nation’s football community.
Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman” for his authoritative presence, was a towering figure in Nigerian football. He captained the Green Eagles to their historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, cementing his legacy as a national hero. As a coach, he guided the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2004 tournament. His club career with Enugu Rangers was equally illustrious, marked by multiple domestic titles and the 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup victory.
In a heartfelt statement, President Tinubu hailed Chukwu’s trailblazing career, describing him as “a symbol of excellence and patriotism” who brought joy to millions and inspired a generation of footballers. “His legacies will live on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the thrilling moments he created for fans,” Tinubu said, adding that Chukwu’s contributions to Nigerian sport would be remembered with “great respect and admiration.”
The President also prayed for the repose of Chukwu’s soul and comfort for his family, noting the enduring impact of his remarkable life.
Chukwu’s death leaves a profound void in Nigerian football, but his achievements continue to resonate, ensuring his place as one of the nation’s greatest sporting legends.
