US Mission in Nigeria Condemns Threats Against Religious Leaders Over Human Rights Testimony

Lagos, 10 April 2025 – The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed deep concern over reports of intimidation and threats directed at two prominent Nigerian religious figures, Bishop Wilfred Anagbe and Reverend Father Remigius, following their testimony before the US House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) on 12 March. The leaders had spoken out about the human rights situation in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, a region long plagued by violence and unrest.

In a statement released on Thursday via its official Twitter account, @USinNigeria, the US Mission described the reported threats as “disturbing” and reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of expression as a cornerstone of democracy. “No one should be subject to threats for exercising that right,” the statement read. “Freedom of expression is an essential human right and central to the function of democracy, in Nigeria and the United States.”

The US Mission called on all parties to respect the rights of Bishop Anagbe and Father Remigius to speak freely without fear of retribution or retaliation. The religious leaders’ testimony last month highlighted ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, including sectarian violence and alleged human rights abuses, drawing international attention to the region.

The statement comes amid growing scrutiny of Nigeria’s human rights record, particularly in areas affected by conflict between communities and armed groups. The US Mission’s intervention underscores its broader diplomatic efforts to promote democratic values and protect individuals exercising their fundamental rights.
