Peter Obi Calls for Release of Detained Youth Quadri Yusuf Alabi
London, 8 April 2025 – Peter Obi, a prominent Nigerian politician, has raised concerns over the prolonged detention of Quadri Yusuf Alabi, a young boy held in custody for over three months without trial. Speaking after delivering a speech at a Commonwealth event in London today, Obi highlighted the plight of the youth, who appeared in court for the first time in March but remains detained.
In a statement shared via social media, Obi revealed that he has reached out to Barrister Inibehe Effiong, a Nigerian human rights lawyer, to assist in securing Alabi’s release. Fortunately, Effiong has already been actively involved in the case, working to expedite the process.
“I have contacted a lawyer, Barrister Inibehe Effiong @InibeheEffiong, who, luckily, has been actively working to intensify his release,” Obi wrote.
The politician, known for his advocacy for good governance and youth empowerment, used the opportunity to call on Nigerian authorities to uphold the rule of law. He urged the police and government agencies to refrain from what he described as the “weaponizing” of citizens, particularly the country’s youth.
“I sincerely appeal to the police and other agents of the government to always operate within the law and the rules and stop the weaponizing [of] citizens, especially our youths, who need our care and love to unleash their talents and energy towards building a new Nigeria that is possible,” Obi stated.
