Peter Obi Applauds EU Efforts in Nigeria During Meeting with New Ambassador
Abuja, 10 April 2025 – Peter Obi, a prominent Nigerian political figure, met with the newly appointed European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, in the capital city this morning. The meeting shed light on the EU’s ongoing initiatives in Nigeria, particularly in the North East and North West regions, which Obi praised as deserving of special focus.
During the discussion, Ambassador Mignot briefed Obi on the EU’s extensive work in critical development sectors, including education, health, and agriculture, as well as efforts centred around the Lake Chad Basin. Obi expressed his delight at the EU’s targeted interventions in these regions, which have long faced challenges linked to poverty, insecurity, and underdevelopment.
“I was particularly elated by their concentration in the North East and North West, which, for me, deserves special attention,” Obi stated in a post on X following the meeting. He went on to commend the EU’s commitment to projects that aim to educate communities, alleviate poverty, and boost agricultural productivity—initiatives he believes could address the root causes of criminality and hardship in these areas.
Obi, a vocal advocate for good governance, urged the EU to continue its efforts, describing their work as vital to Nigeria’s progress. “I urge them not to relent in the good work they are doing to help turn Nigeria around,” he said, adding that such support, when paired with competent and compassionate leadership, could be transformative for the country.
The former presidential candidate emphasised his belief that Nigeria’s fortunes could be reversed through a combination of international cooperation and effective domestic leadership. “With all this support—combined with good governance, competent leadership with capacity, and compassion, we can turn Nigeria around,” he concluded.
