Osun Local Government Elections Face Suspension Amid Security Threats

Abuja, 21st February 2025 – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has advised the Osun State Government to suspend the planned Local Government elections following credible intelligence reports indicating a high risk of violence and security threats. The NPF's assessment suggests that various political elements and interest groups are mobilising to incite unrest, disrupt public order, and undermine democratic stability.

According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, intelligence gathered through joint security operations has highlighted the volatile situation in Osun State. The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have determined that proceeding with the elections under these conditions could result in widespread disorder, posing a serious threat to lives and property.
“The Nigeria Police Force strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the planned elections forthwith in the interest of public safety and national stability,” the statement read. While the security agencies remain fully prepared to respond to any disturbances, the police believe that suspending the elections would help prevent unnecessary confrontations and uphold the democratic process.

In addition to security threats, the police highlighted legal uncertainties surrounding the elections. The statement referenced a recent legal clarification by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice concerning the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on 22nd February 2025. This judgment is said to have nullified an earlier ruling by the Federal High Court, casting doubt on the legal standing of the elections as currently planned.

Given the combination of security risks and legal ambiguities, the NPF has urged the Osun State Government to reconsider its decision and prioritise the safety of citizens.

The police have also called on all stakeholders, including political parties, to exercise restraint and ensure that peace is maintained during this period of uncertainty. “The NPF reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Nigeria’s democratic processes are upheld in accordance with the law,” the statement concluded.
As tensions rise over the fate of the elections, all eyes will now be on the Osun State Government to determine its next course of action in response to the NPF’s advisory.
