Olumide Akpata Breaks Silence: A Journey Through Grief and Renewal
Former Labour Party gubernatorial candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has finally addressed his prolonged absence from social media, putting to rest speculations surrounding his silence. In a heartfelt statement, Akpata detailed the deeply personal losses that necessitated his hiatus while reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the people of Edo State and Nigeria at large.
Acknowledging the discussions that his absence had sparked, Akpata refuted claims that he had withdrawn due to political reasons. Instead, he revealed that his silence was driven by profound personal grief. During his gubernatorial campaign, he suffered the loss of his uncle, Dr. Sunny Akpata, a father figure who played a pivotal role in shaping his values. The urgency of the elections delayed the proper commemoration of his uncle’s passing, and it was only in November 2024 that he and his family were able to lay him to rest with the honour he deserved.
However, the trials did not end there. Shortly after, his father, Dr. Henry Akpata—his only surviving parent for 33 years and a pillar of strength—fell gravely ill. Akpata devoted himself fully to his father’s care, hoping for recovery. Sadly, on 10th January 2025, his father passed away peacefully, surrounded by close family. Reflecting on his father’s life, Akpata paid tribute to his gentle guidance and deep commitment to the wellbeing of his children. His passing, he noted, marked the end of an era, but he remains grateful for the legacy of wisdom and love left behind.
In his statement, Akpata also took a moment to acknowledge the hardships that Nigerians continue to endure, from economic struggles to security challenges. His personal grief, he noted, had only strengthened his resolve to remain engaged in public life, standing not only for the people but with them.
As preparations continue to celebrate his father’s life and legacy, Akpata reassured his supporters that he would soon return to public engagement with renewed determination. He reiterated his commitment to transparency, steadfast leadership, and the pursuit of a better Edo State and Nigeria.
