Enugu Mourns the Passing of Chief Dubem Gideon Onyia, Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs
Enugu, Nigeria – The people of Enugu State are in mourning following the passing of statesman and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Gideon Onyia, at the age of 73. The news of his demise has been met with deep grief and a profound sense of loss, as tributes pour in for a leader whose service to his community, state, and nation was exemplary.
Chief Onyia was a distinguished diplomat, patriot, and consummate public servant whose contributions left an indelible mark on Nigeria's political and constitutional landscape. His career in public service was one of dedication and excellence, earning him the reputation of a man who shone like a million stars in the service of his people.
A former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Chief Onyia was appointed by former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to serve as Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2003. In this role, he played a significant part in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy and international relations.
Beyond his ministerial role, Chief Onyia continued to serve Nigeria in various high-profile capacities. He held the positions of Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Joint Commission, Chairman of the Sao Tome and Principe Joint Boundary Commission, and Chairman of the International Technical Commission for the National Boundary Commission. His expertise in diplomacy and governance was instrumental in advancing Nigeria’s interests on the international stage.
Chief Onyia also made immense contributions to Nigeria’s political and constitutional development. He was a member of the 1988/1998 Constituent Assembly in Abuja, where he played a vital role in shaping the country’s legal framework. Additionally, he served as the Secretary General of the Eastern Mandate Union, National Secretary of the Peoples Consensus Party, and was a founding member and national officer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A man of great integrity and compassion, Chief Onyia was known not only for his political and diplomatic acumen but also for his philanthropy and dedication to justice, peace, and equity. His legacy as a selfless leader and intellectual giant will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State has expressed his condolences on behalf of the government and people of Enugu. He extended heartfelt sympathies to Chief Onyia’s immediate family, the people of Ngwo, and the many Nigerians whose lives were touched by his service.
“The demise of Chief Onyia is a monumental loss to Enugu State and Nigeria as a whole,” Governor Mbah stated. “His selfless service, vast experience, deep knowledge, and local and international reach will be sorely missed. I pray to God to grant his fine soul eternal repose.”
