EFCC Denies Political Links in Aisha Achimugu Investigation
Abuja, 28 March 2025 – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has firmly dismissed media speculation tying its investigation of Ms. Aisha Achimugu to political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement released today, the anti-corruption agency clarified that the probe into Achimugu’s activities is entirely unrelated to the two prominent politicians. The EFCC emphasised that Achimugu is under scrutiny for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering, offences for which she has been declared Wanted.
The investigation into Achimugu began in 2022, according to the EFCC. Although she sought a court injunction to block the Commission from arresting, investigating, or detaining her, this legal move was overturned on 19 February 2025 by a Federal High Court in Abuja. The court ruled that no judicial authority can impede the investigative powers of the EFCC or similar agencies when there is reasonable suspicion or evidence of a crime. Furthermore, the court upheld an interim order to forfeit assets believed to be proceeds of crime, dismissing Achimugu’s challenge as baseless.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity, stressed that the case against Achimugu bears no connection—direct or indirect—to any political dealings or individuals. “The foregoing clearly establishes that the EFCC’s case against her has no immediate or remote nexus with any politician or any veiled or open reference to any political engagement or transaction,” the statement read.
Reaffirming its commitment to impartiality, the EFCC described itself as a non-partisan and non-sectarian body. It urged the public to trust in the professionalism of its work and refrain from attributing unrelated motives to its operations.
The statement comes amid heightened media interest in the Achimugu case, with the EFCC keen to set the record straight and maintain focus on its anti-corruption mandate.
