Recall Process Advances for Kogi Central Senator

Abuja, 26 March 2025 – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has provided an update on the ongoing recall process of the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, confirming that key procedural steps have been taken following yesterday’s initial statement.

In a press release issued today, Wednesday 26 March 2025, the Commission announced that it has received a letter from the petitioners’ representatives containing their contact details, including addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses. This submission, addressed to the Chairman of the Commission, satisfies a critical requirement outlined in Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024.

Following this development, INEC has formally notified the Senator in question of the petition filed against her. A letter was delivered to her official address, with copies also sent to the presiding officer of the Senate and published on the Commission’s website for public access.

The next phase of the process involves a thorough examination of the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners. The Commission will verify whether the petition has been signed by more than half (over 50%) of the registered voters in Kogi Central Senatorial District, as mandated by the recall guidelines. This scrutiny is set to take place over the coming days, with the results to be announced publicly. The outcome will determine whether the recall effort proceeds further.

Speaking on behalf of INEC, Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to conducting the process with fairness and openness. “We once again reassure Nigerians that the process will be open and transparent,” he stated.
