Natasha Akpoti’s Supporters Storm NASS, Demand Akpabio’s Resignation
Members of various civil society groups gathered in large numbers on Wednesday at the entrance of the National Assembly (NASS) in Abuja, demanding that Senate President Godswill Akpabio step down to allow for a thorough investigation into allegations raised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The demonstrators, carrying placards and chanting slogans, called for accountability and transparency in governance. They insisted that Akpabio’s continued tenure as Senate President could hinder a fair probe into the allegations made by Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, a civil society leader stated, “We demand that the Senate President step aside immediately to allow for an independent and unbiased investigation into the claims raised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The credibility of the National Assembly is at stake.”
Security personnel were deployed to the scene to ensure order, but the protest remained peaceful. Despite their attempts to gain entry into the National Assembly complex, the demonstrators were prevented from doing so by security operatives.
As the protest gained momentum, calls for Akpabio’s resignation grew louder, with various stakeholders urging the Senate leadership to prioritise transparency and due process.
Neither Akpabio nor his office has issued an official response to the demonstration at the time of this report. However, political observers believe this development could further intensify the scrutiny surrounding the allegations and put pressure on the Senate President to respond formally.
This protest marks another chapter in the ongoing political controversy, as Nigerians continue to demand accountability from their leaders.
