Lavrov Calls for Independent Palestinian State, Rejects Resettlement Proposals
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has reiterated his country’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state while firmly opposing proposals to resettle Palestinians across the region.
Speaking on Tuesday, Lavrov emphasised the urgency of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through diplomatic means, stressing that any attempt to disperse Palestinians beyond their homeland would only exacerbate tensions.
“The resettlement of Palestinians throughout the region, that will only set off a time bomb,” Lavrov stated, warning of the potential for long-term instability should such plans be pursued.
Russia has consistently backed a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders, advocating for East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state. Lavrov’s remarks come amid ongoing violence and heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
His comments also align with Moscow’s broader diplomatic stance, which has sought to balance relations between Israel and Arab nations while criticising Western policies in the region.
The situation remains complex, with efforts to broker peace facing significant obstacles. Lavrov’s latest statement underscores Russia’s continued role in international discussions on the Palestinian issue, positioning Moscow as a key player in shaping future diplomatic efforts.
Lavrov’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions from international stakeholders. Palestinian leaders have welcomed his stance, viewing it as reinforcement of their right to statehood. However, Israeli officials and Western allies remain wary of Russia’s influence in the region, particularly in the wake of the ongoing war in Ukraine and broader geopolitical tensions.
As diplomatic efforts continue, it remains to be seen whether Lavrov’s calls will translate into tangible progress towards a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
