Supreme Court Ruling Heralds Bright Future for Labour Party, Says Senator Kingibe
Abuja, 7 April 2025 – Senator Ireti Kingibe, the Labour Party representative for the Federal Capital Territory, has hailed a recent Supreme Court ruling as a landmark victory for internal democracy and political party autonomy in Nigeria. In a statement released earlier today, the senator praised the decision, describing it as a timely affirmation of the rule of law and a boost to democratic principles within the Labour Party.
The Supreme Court’s judgement, which reinforces the independence of political parties, comes at a critical juncture for the Labour Party as it seeks to unify its ranks and chart a path forward. Senator Kingibe expressed optimism about the party’s future, particularly under the leadership of the caretaker committee chaired by Senator Nenadi Usman. “This decision provides the Labour Party with a much-needed opportunity to unite under purposeful and capable leadership,” she said. “I believe that under Senator Usman’s stewardship, the future of the Labour Party is bright.”
Kingibe highlighted Senator Usman’s proven track record, expressing confidence in her ability to foster a transparent and inclusive leadership that will steer the party towards integrity and progress. “This is a pivotal moment to rebuild trust within the party, reestablish our structures, and lay the foundation for a stronger, more focused movement,” she added.
A key element of the senator’s vision for the Labour Party is the integration of the Obidient movement—a grassroots campaign that gained prominence during recent elections. Kingibe described the movement’s passion and innovation as reflective of a “democratic awakening” among millions of Nigerians. “The integration of the Obidient movement into the Labour Party is not only welcome—it is essential,” she emphasised. “By embracing and institutionalising this movement, we will build a broader, more representative platform that speaks to the hopes of a new generation.”
In her call to action, Senator Kingibe urged all Labour Party members—both longstanding and new—to rally together in a spirit of renewal. “Let us set aside divisions and focus on the shared mission of delivering good governance, social justice, and a better future for all Nigerians,” she said. She underscored the importance of unity and collective effort, stating, “Together, under capable leadership and guided by the principles of democracy and the rule of law, we will move forward, stronger and more united than ever.”
